second class upper Nasarawa State University political science graduate has shocked many when she could not teach government subject in a secondary school during her one year compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Miss Abdullahi who was deployed to a govern secondary school at Chikun local government area of Kaduna state could not teach Senior Secondary 1 and 2 a government subject.
The school principal at first thought the corps member was refusing to teach and threatened to report her to the state NYSC authority, but later realized the corps member cannot teach the subject when she confessed to the principal that she does not know the subject.
Wondered over the development, the principal questioned Abdullahi how she managed to graduate from Nasarawa University with 2.1 and cannot teach a government subject in secondary school.
Angry with the development, the principal rejected the corps member while she was redeployed to the local government secretariat where she completed her NYSC and passed out.
Miss Jane, a female NYSC member who narrated the incident to WAR, explained Abdullahi’s experience came as a surprise to many having graduated with a second class upper as a political scientist.
She however added that there are many of the NYSC members who are struggling to defend the course they studied in the school and wondered why schools will allow such kind of persons to graduate and issue them a certificate.
A teacher in the school who did not want his name mentioned, told WAR, it was an embarrassing moment when the school found out that the Nasarawa university 2.1 graduate could not teach SS1 and 2 students government.
Angry with the development, the teacher said some Nigerian university must know that the certificate they issue to their graduates carry their name and they have the responsibility to protect the institution name.
He however added that universities should recall certificates from their graduates who disgraced them in the society.
When WAR sought Abdullahi’s explanation, she said she could not teach because she was shy and not because she is not intelligent enough to teach.
