In response to the directive of the Federal Government that institutions should develop strategies on how to stop the spread of COVID-19, the Provost of the College, Professor James Bassey Ejue commissioned a number of key departments to fast-track their research and provide a workable solution to stop the spread of the deadly virus in our own environment. Taking up the gauntlet therefore, the Department of Chemistry under the headship of Dr. Simon Wada embarked on the production of the alcoholic based hand sanitizers for the use of the College Community.
Making a formal presentation of the sanitizers to College Management on Monday, June1, 2020 at the Academic Boardroom, the HOD, Dr Wada eulogized the Provost and thanked him immensely for providing the Staff of the department of Chemistry the opportunity to show-case their skills and talent. He also thanked his professional team for their diligence and contributions. Thereafter, Mr. Upel Ushie, a Chief Lecturer in the department formally handed over the sanitizers to the Provost.
In his remarks, Professor Ejue noted that when he resumed work in the College, he challenged the departments to innovate and come out with innovations that can help to generate revenue for the College. Doing so, according to him can equally help to write the name of the College in gold in the annals of history. He therefore expressed pleasure that COVID-19 has presented the opportunity and Management particularly called on both the Departments of Home Economics and Chemistry to mass produce face masks and hand sanitizers respectively. He thanked the head of department of Chemistry and his team for living up to expectation. He pointed out that the alcoholic based hand sanitizers produced by the College can stand the test of time as it is of the World Health Organization's recommended standard. He recommended the sanitizers for the use of both the College Community and the general public.
As the Federal Government has directed that Schools should prepare to resume, the Chief Executive urged that the various Unions in the College as well as the Student Union Government should laise with the department of Chemistry to mass produce the sanitizers for their members. However, he advised the production team to be cost conscious so that the product can be affordable.
All members of Management as well as the Chairman of both COEASU and SSUCOEN were present at the brief handover ceremony which was done in strict compliance to COVID-19 social distancing protocols. See pictures below:
